PUVA (Psoralen ultra violet ray)





Definition: PUVA means psoralen ultra violet ray. It is the irradiation with only UVA which may be performed with special fluorescent tubes. This form of ultra violet ray is usually given two hours after the patient has taken a photoactive drug 8 Methoxy psoralen.

Mechanism: Psoralen is a drug which makes the skin and the lens of eyes temporarily sensitive to UVA. The drug alone is inactive in the skin, but it becomes activated in the presence of UVA and binds to the DNA thiamine bases.

Dosage: Dosage depends upon the patient skin type. Dosage on a PUVA regimen is measured using J/Cm2. The dose may increased by 0.5 J/Cm2 to 2 J/cm2

Indication: PUVA has been shown to be very successful in controlling the following diseases;
1.     Psoriasis
2.     Atopic eczema
3.     Vitiligo
