Typical intercostals space

Definition (Typical intercostals space): The potential spaces between two adjacent typical ribs are called typical intercostals spaces.

From 3rd to 8th intercostal spaces are typical spaces, they extend from lateral sterna border to vertebral column.

Boundaries:

1)      Above: Lower border of upper rib.
2)      Below: Upper border of lower rib.
3)      Antero-medially: Lateral border of sternum.
4)      Posterior-medially: Body of thoracic vertebra.

Content:

1)      Muscles: Outer to inner-
a)      External internal muscle.
b)      Internal intercostals muscle.
c)      Innermost intercostals muscle.
2)      Vessels:
a)      Anterior intercostals vessels: Two in each space.
b)      Posterior intercostals space: One in each space.
3)      Nerves: Intercostal nerve (from 3rd to 8th ): One in each corresponding space.

Arrangements of structures:

1)      Muscles: Outer to inner-
a)      External intercostals muscle.
b)      Internal intercostals muscle.
c)      Innermost intercostals muscle.
2)      Vessels & Nerve: From above downwards:
a)      Intercostal vein.
b)      Intercostal artery.
c)      Intercostal nerve.
They lie in between the internal intercostals and innermost intercostals muscle.
