Wrist joint




Definition: The wrist (radial-carpal) joint is a synovial joint formed by articulation of the distal end of radius and the triangular articular disc with the scaphoid, lunate & triquentral.

Type: Synovial ellipsoid joint.

Fibrous capsule and ligament: Fibrous capsule enclose the joint and is lined by synovial membrane, which is attached to the margins of the articular surafces. Fibrous cpasule is strengthened by palmar radio-carpal and ulno-carpal, dorsal radio-carpal and radial ulnar collateral ligaments.

Nerve supply: Anterior and posterior interosseous nerve.


Movements:

[A] Flexion:

1)      Flexor carpi radialis.
2)      Flexor carpi ulnaris.
3)      Palmaris longus.

Assisted by:
1)      Flexor digitorum superficialis.
2)      Flexor digitorum profundus.
3)      Flexor pollicis longus.

[B] Extension:

1)      Extensor carpi radialis longus.
2)      Extensor carpi radialis brevis.
3)      Extensor  carpi ulnaris.

Assisted by:
1)      Extensor digitorum.
2)      Extensor indicis.
3)      Extensor digiti minimi.
4)      Extensor pollicis longus.

[C] Abduction:

1)      Flexor carpi radialis.
2)      Extensor carpi radialis longus.
3)      Extensor carpi radialis brevis.

Assisted by:
1)      Abductor pollicis longus.
2)      Extensor pollicis longus.
3)      Extensor pollicis brevis.

[D] Adduction:

1)      Flexor carpi ulnaris.
2)      Extensor carpi ulnaris.
