Standing frame



Spastic cerebral palsy: Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common type of cerebral palsy. This palsy appears stiff and their movements may look stiff and jerky. Spasticity is a form of hypertonic or increased muscle tone.

Different designs of standing frames for paraplegic & tetraplegic:

(1)   Standing board: A simple standing board can help hold the patient in a stable position. This one leans against a table.

(2)   Leaning board: On this board the patient can lean.

(3)   Back board: This can be used to gradually bring a child to a standing position. It is especially useful for older children who get dizzy if stood up straight too quickly. This can happen after a spinal cord injury or a long, sever illness. The child can be stood up gradually and for longer each day.

a)      Large tile or cement pipe.
b)      Hollow log.
c)      Plastic garbage container (Fasten it to a wide base to keep it from tipping over).
(6)   Standing frames: These are mainly for a patient with contractures or painful joints who has difficulty standing straight. The patient can gradually be straightened up. It has different models:
a)      Movable model.
b)      Adjustable model.
c)      Simple fixed model.

(a)   Movable model: It can be made by-
·         Upright can be made of wood or metal tubing.
·         Wide belt of thick cloth with velero or strap adjustment.
·         Adjustable board with padded notches for knees.
·         The notched part can be made of foam plastic.

(b)   Adjustable model: It can be made by-
·         Bolt or pin for adjustment.
·         Adjustable padded hip support.
·         Adjustable padded ankle foot support.

(c)    Simple fixed model: It can be made by-

(7)   Standing and walking frame: This is a useful aid to begin standing and walking for patient paralyzed or severely affected below the waist (paraplegia, spina bifida, diplegic, cerebral palsy). It can be made of Velcro or other fattener chest strap, the back board should tilt back slight to let patient stand straight up, foot positioning block and straps..

(8)   Standing walking brace: This has the same use as the standing walking frame above but is especially useful for children who need to learn how to walk before they are fitted for braces with a hip band or body brace. It may two types:
a)      Design that does not allow sitting.

b)      Design with hip and knee hinges to allow sitting.

Way of standing frames brings a health benefit to a spastic cerebral palsy:

Ø  Facilities a natural symmetrical standing posture.
Ø  Improve motor skill.
Ø  Improve upper body strength.
Ø  Improve upper body balance.
Ø  Improve standing tolerance & endurance.
Ø  Alternative (relive) of pain.
Ø  Helps in skeletal development.
Ø  Improve posture.
Ø  Improve joint flexibility & ROM.
Ø  Prevents muscle wasting.
Ø  Stretches by muscles to prevent tightness.
