Palmar aponeurosis

Definition: This is the thickened deep fascia of the central part of the palm.

Features: It is triangular in shape

1)      Apex: It blendsproximally with the flexor retinaculum and is continuous with the tendon of palmaris longus.
2)      Base: It is directed distally, it divides into four slips near the head of metacarpals of middle four fingers.
Each slips divides into two parts and becoms continuous with the fibrous flexor sheaths
.
Extension: Pass to the deep transverse ligaments, capsule the metacarpophlangeal joints & the sides of the base of the proximal phalanx.

Function:

1)      If flexes the skin of the palm and thus improves the grip.
2)      It protects the underlying tendon, vessels and nerves.


Cinical anatomy: Inflammaiton involving the ulnar side of the palmar aponeurosis results in Dupuytren’s contracture.
