Rate: It is the expression of the
probability of occurrence of a particular event in a defined population during
a specified period of time. Mathematically a rate is expressed as:
Where:
X= the number of events or cases.
Y= the total population at risk.
K= it is a round number.
An
example: Of topical rate is the death it is
written as below:

Elements of a rate:
Numerator, Penominator, Multiplier.
Various categories of
rate:
1) Crude
rate: These are the actual observation such as the birth and death rates.
2) Specific
rate: These are the actual observation to specific causes (e.g. Tuberculosis)
3) Standardized:
These are obtained by indirect methods of standardization. E.g. sex
standardization.
