Rate

Rate: It is the expression of the probability of occurrence of a particular event in a defined population during a specified period of time. Mathematically a rate is expressed as:

X/Y=K

Where:
X= the number of events or cases.
Y= the total population at risk.
K= it is a round number.

An example: Of topical rate is the death it is written as below:
Number of death in one year
Death rate:

                        Midyear population

Elements of a rate: Numerator, Penominator, Multiplier.

Various categories of rate:

1)      Crude rate: These are the actual observation such as the birth and death rates.
2)      Specific rate: These are the actual observation to specific causes (e.g. Tuberculosis)
3)      Standardized: These are obtained by indirect methods of standardization. E.g. sex standardization.
