Popliteal fossa



Situation: It is situated in the posterior aspect of lower 1/3 of femur, knee joint and upper part of tibia.

Boundaries:

a)      Above & laterally: Biceps femoris.
b)      Above & medially:
Þ    Semitendinosus &
Þ    Semimembranosus.
Supplemented by:
Þ    Gracilis.
Þ    Sartorius.
Þ    Adductor magnus.
c)      Below & laterally:
Þ    Lateral head of gastrocnemius.
Þ    Plantaris.
d)     Below & medially: Medial head of gastrocnemius.
e)      Floor: From above downwards:
Þ    Popliteal surface of femur.
Þ    Capsul of knee joint with oblique popliteal ligament.
Þ    Fascia covering popliteus.
Þ    Posterior surface of upper end of tibia.
f)       Roof: Formed by
Þ    Skin.
Þ    Superficial fascia &
Þ    Popliteal fascia.



Contents:

1)      Popliteal artery & its branches.
2)      Popliteal vein & its tributaries.
3)      Tibial nerve & its branches.
4)      Common peroneal nerve & its branches.
5)      Posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh.
6)      Genicular branch of obturator nerve.
7)      Popliteal lymph nodes.
8)      Fat.
