Necrosis

Definition:  Necrosis refers to a spectrum of morphologic changes that follow cell death in living tissue, largely resulting from the progressive degradative action of enzymes on the lethally injured cell.

Classification/types of nacrosis with example:
[A] Basic types:

1.     Coagulative necrosis: e.g- ischemic necrosis of heart (myocardial infarction) , kidney, liver, adrenal gland and other solid organs.
2.     Liquefactive/colliquative necrosis: e.g.- Abscess, boil and ischemic necrosis of brain tissue.
[B] Special types:

1.     Caseous necrosis: e.g-granuloma of tuberculosis.
2.     Fat necrosis:
a)     Enzymatic fat necrosis: e.g- enzymatic fat necrosis of pancreas and omental tissue.
b)    Traumatic fat necrosis: e.g- traumatic fat necrosis of breast.
3.     Gangrenous necrosis: e.g- any necrosis with superadded putrefaction.
4.     Fibrinoid necrosis: e.g- Acute rheumatic fever, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
5.     Necrosis of muscle: e.g- Zenker’s degeneration.
6.     Osteonecrosis: Necrosis of bone an affect the medullary bone with its medullary avity and trabecular bone or affect both medullary and cortical bone.
