Theraputic
index(TI):It is the ratio between lethal dose for
50% population(LD50) and effective dose for 50% population(ED50)
i.e
TI= LD50/ED50
In
clinical pharmacology TI=
Importance
of TI:
1) The
more the TI,the safer the drug & vice versa.
2) For
safer therapeutic application of a drug,Its TI must be >1.
3) For
application of new drug,TI has greater significance.
4) If
TI of a drug is low,it should be used with care.
5) A
drug may have differnet TI depending upon its clinical use.e.g Aspirin-

In headache-TI high.
·
In reheumatic
arthritis-TI low.

drugs having low terapeutic index are:
1) Lithium.
2) Warfarin.
3) Thiopental
