Osteomalacia
Definition
(Osteomalacia): Increased unclassified osteoid
immature skeleton.
Definition (Rickets): If it occurs in immature skeletal then it is called rickets.
Caused:
[A] Vitamin D deficiency:
• Dietary.
• Malabsorption.
[B] Renal disease:
• Glomerular disease.
• Tubular disease.
[C] Hepatic disease:
• Parachimal failure.
• Obstructive jaundice.
Radiological finding of osteomalacia:
1) Decreased bone density.
2) Loser’s zone common site: Scapula, femoral neck & shaft, pubic rami and ribs.
3) Coarsening of the travecula pattern with ill defined travecula.
4) Bone softening.
5) Protrusion of acetabuli.
6) Bowing of long bones concave vertebral bodies.
